Master in Interior and Living Design at Domus Academy
Interior and Living Design courses in Milan

LECTURES
The Areas of Languages

Art of Lighting Design
The light as art, as source; the design able to enhance the main characteristics of a light source.

Communication Art
Art has always been a communication tool of a society, manifestation of discomfort or expressive power of an individual.

Design of Soft Sensorial Quality (Sound Design, Fragrances, Colours, Flowers, Food and Table Design)
The space surrounding us becomes a "nest", places are designed and transformed to give the greatest comfort through the emotions of the senses.

Aesthetics and Theory of Contemporary Art
The history and critic of contemporary art are at the basis of a formal and emotional research that cannot be separated from it. An analysis of figurative art supports the comprehension and the innovation of the surrounding world.

Interior Design History
An essential cultural path to face new projects and to understand the evolution of worldwide design related also to the changes of society between tradition and innovation.

Museology
A journey in the world of collections and museums.

Photography for Interior Design
Through the work of the most famous photographers, it will be possible to understand the difficulties in portraying interiors in the best possible way.

Textile, Antique Furniture and Art's objects
The history of textiles and the identification of furniture styles.

Theatrical Design (Stage and Set Design)
An enclosed space loaded with atmospheres: the theatre lives of actors moving and interacting with changing scenografies that transform themselves in a very short time, environments that are able to tell a story.

Virtual Space Design (Videogames, Virtual Interior Projects)
A world "other", rich of suggestions, where the imagination is free since it doesn't have to follow any rules. The laws of physics are simulated and the design is subject to the performance of the machine.

Visual Art
New frontiers of art, new languages where expressive tools change and pass from the canvas to the computer, from the wall to the space. The observer is immersed into the work, often becoming an essential element of it.

The Areas of Strategy

Design of Services
Theoretical analysis on the relations and actions between the product, its value and the sphere of services to guarantee its distribution, visibility, assistance or upkeep.

Design Strategy for Cultural Heritage
The fulcrum of the course is the importance to refurbish or transform buildings and interiors of great historical value, and the controversial theories regarding their conservation or transformation; it will therefore analyse the eventual strategies that need to be adopted in the choices concerning design and communication.

Design Strategy
Analysis of the connections between industry and research, between investigation, promotion and spreading.

Marketing and Design Management
The study of social dynamics and style trends. The rules and the modalities to move in the world of product management and certification.

Sustainable Design
Within the current society of consumptions, the aim is to evaluate proposals and solutions taking into account the ecological balances, analysing the living environment starting from projects facing those issues.

Business Presentation and Interpersonal Behaviour
To understand the right strategy to use in the presentation of a project to a client is at the basis of a mature individual who is proposing him/herself in the market of work with method and professionalism. The personal presentation, above all, should be in line with the expectations of the client who wants from the designer the same discipline of the project.

Professional Practice
Application and interpretation of methodologies and concepts able to support and develop a profession.

Personal Portfolio
To understand the individual know-how and to learn how important is the elaboration of the curriculum vitae. The graphics and the paging are at the basis of the enrichment of a project that has to be winning when the individual faces the world of work.

The Areas of Research

Ambient Intelligence
To live in a comfortable space thanks to automation. The new technologies, connected to the microelectronic smart house, have introduced domestic devices - able to monitor and make your house safer - in line with different needs of the user as well as more and more integrated in the living reality.

Building and Interior System
The culture of constructional technologies. The culture of the project.

Information & Communication Technology
New technologies of information and communication: internet, digital technologies, design of web solutions, web marketing and e-business models.

Culture of Living and Anthropology
The language of design, the concept of the space as a place of human relationships and human nature itself are here discussed and strictly connected.

Design Trends
Multiplicity of areas, flexibility and new icons of contemporary.

Body Conscious Design
The study of the necessary rules to design products destined to interact with human beings, understanding their proportions, their habits and movements.

Materials and Finishes
The study of materials and their updating, as tools that are able to characterise and increase the value of an object, of a project.

Science of Lighting Design
The importance of the light through its peculiarities; the way it shapes or enhances objects inside a space: colours, plasticity, movement, power.

PRACTICE
The Areas of Project

Home Design
Designing domesticity means to understand that the home is the environment in which the most interesting transformations in our personal lives and relationships occur. The theme explored during the workshop will be the new borders of living. Concentrating resources and functions will lead to more flexibility and freedom to use the space.

Exhibition Design
The workshop proposes to analyse and take a creative journey - while formulating new proposals and scenarios - into multidisciplinary Exhibition Design; from the design of museum exhibitions to temporary exhibitions, fair stands, fashion shows as new production and experience areas, to design of contexts and integrated systems for cultural heritage and communication.

Retail Design
The workshop offers a learning process that delves into the design of retail stores as new places to experience sales, production and shopping.
Moreover, the students will elaborate concrete simulations of their merchandising and integrated communication projects.

Travel Space Design
Travel Space Design as "space in movement" halfway between the city and the home. The design experimentation scenario is one of analysis and design in the areas of Interior Yacht Design, Interior Cruise Design, Camping Design and Outerspace Design. New frontiers and possible visions dealing with the interrelations between human beings and their behaviour in environments with specific characteristics like gravity, food or movement.

Office Design
Study of work spaces understood as a synthesis of design and architecture, and the analysis of the new definitions of activity connected with the flexibility and productivity of the workforce. New concepts and new ways of conceiving work and the relations between people and their work environment.

Public Space Design
Bearing continually in mind the cardinal principles of design, this section considers the urgent needs and the habits of a part of the population needing careful consideration in terms of design of specific spaces, of the use of materials and of a variety of ergonomic solutions.
The seminar deals with the social and semantic complexity of design for schools, nursery schools, churches and convents, residential communities for seniors, as well as design for the handicapped.

Transit Space Design
In this workshops, consideration is given to the design of green vegetation for interiors as a study linking living spaces and nature.
Airports, railway stations, underground stations, supermarkets, places of transit in general, places made for fleeting human relations conditioned by movements, timetables and differing needs - places that are at the centre of important analyses of, for example, total communication and globalisation.

Accommodation Industry Design
Here complex themes are examined related to Hotel Design, Health and Wellness Design, Camping Heritage Travelling and the design of restaurant and entertainment spaces.
People and their leisure activities are examined together with all possible influences, designing spaces as privileged places able to offer both comfort and efficient services.

Industrial Archeology
The reorganisation of industrial spaces is one of the themes of great interest that every city is confronted with. The importance of the recovery abandoned industrial spaces, often integrated into the urban fabric, and the subsequent change of their intended use, is analysed here at several levels. This involves a study of the territory from a socio-economic point of view and, of course, interior design interventions aimed precisely at up-valuing and revitalising (from macro to micro) the spaces under examination.

InSite Design
The demolition and rebuilding where the historical façade persists becoming the stage that hides and then unveils new living cells, new constructional and architectural solutions. Projects, now widely spread, for buildings with a high architectural relevance address the city and the retrieval of its value.

Masters Thesis
The Masters thesis, which is prepared in the last three months of the course, is set up as the big theme-based design competitions. Students under the guidance of a lecturer or a company leader, will carry out an original piece of research at a high level in a specific area, applying a theoretical, analytical and reflective approach.
